How to Calculate Your GPA (Step by Step)

Understand grade points, credit hours, and how to compute both a semester GPA and your cumulative GPA.

Grade points and credits

Each letter grade maps to grade points: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0. Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get "quality points."

Calculating a semester GPA

Add up the quality points for all your courses, then divide by the total credit hours. A 3-credit A (12 points) and a 4-credit B (12 points) give 24 points over 7 credits = a 3.43 GPA.

Cumulative GPA

Your cumulative GPA combines every semester. Multiply your prior GPA by prior credits, add this term's quality points, and divide by total credits across all terms.
